Raymond Loo on Transitioning to Organic

Raymond Loo on Transitioning to Organic

Raymond Loo, featured in this short video clip, passed away in 2013 after having built a reputation as one of the most captivating organic farmers in Canada, with a vision for farming in PEI like no other.

Raymond's family has farmed Springwillow Farms since the early 1800's. His father came from Holland and after marrying, farmed and operated a custom spray business--fully embracing the "Green Revolution". Not until late in his life, did Mr. Gerrit Loo become an important organic leader for Atlantic Canada, inspiring three of his children to become certified organic farmers in PEI too. ACORN has also named its annual organic award for Gerrit Loo (http://www.acornorganic.org/gerritloo...). An interesting story, as told by Raymond, and one to inspire those who think chemical agriculture could never "go organic". (60 secs)

Season Extension with High Tunnels

In this session from the 2013 ACORN Conference in Moncton, Paul and Sandy Arnold discuss their management practices of high tunnels for early and late season production as well as over the winter. They started with one high tunnel, but seeing the pay-off quickly increased the number. High tunnels can allow for excellent production throughout the year; however, they require more management and infrastructure, and call on the grower to be an excellent marketer and record-keeper.
